More than 4 million people in Morocco live below the relative poverty threshold and most of them are located in rural areas. Agriculture provides 80 per cent of rural jobs. The sector is directly responsible for the food security of 30 million consumers. The majority of the farms practice subsistence farming with less than four hectares of land. They are very vulnerable to drought and often try to secure access to off-farm income. Demographic changes, global warming, soil degradation, depletion of water resources, and liberalisation processes are seen as the major hazard for the agricultural sector. Recently, the Moroccan government has launched the Green Morocco Plan (2010-2020), an integrated development strategy for agriculture in Morocco.
